Teaching

I was just saying to someone this morning that Reuben seems to be waiting for Miriam to be ready for them to learn to read together. I know he would have been capable of reading ages ago if he'd been interested, but he hasn't been in a rush and neither have I, particularly given the 2 languages.

He has been enjoying letters again today, including managing to spell Miriam correctly (having been fascinated by the idea of his and Miriam's names being written in "Jesus' book" as he was told at Sunday School) he also did a pretty good job with Yannis, although both of us got a bit stuck over the number of 'n's.

So I dug out some words and pictures to see if he'd like to try reading them. Pin, pit, spin, tap and sit. Reuben could read them second time through and then he decided to teach Miriam. The second time through, after sounding out random letters, she just told us what the words were! Despite my prediction, I was rather surprised that it seemed so simple. Who knows whether either of them will decide they are interested in reading tomorrow, but they seem to be able to do it today.

Reuben did a Sunday School session for Miriam this afternoon, a parody of this morning's session, all done in a teacher type voice. She mostly ignored him, after brief initial interest.

R: Do you want a clean heart or a dirty heart?
M: Clean heart
R: What bad things can you think of?
R: Fighting?
R: Throwing people in the fire?
R: Killing? Or have we already done that?
He gravely 'wrote' each of these on the dirty heart.
R: What is naughty, Miriam?
R: Killing? Killing we've done,
R: What else isn't nice?
R; Lying
R: Fighting?
R: Killing, no killing we've already done...

He's pretty good at getting the messages from Sunday School, and remembering until the following week when he can often give the answers. He likes to go for the 'right' answers. When everyone was asked what they did this week, he stuck his hand up and said 'I prayed'. Miriam stuck her hand up and echoed 'I prayed'. Hehehe
It reminds me of the sunday school joke - teacher: What do rabbits eat? Child: I know it should be Jesus, but is it carrots?
When the teacher asked who wanted to go to heaven, before putting his hand up he turned to me and asked 'do we want to go to heaven Mummy?' as if an outing was being proposed. I said yes so he and Miriam put their hands up.

  1. Thanks for sending the link. I had been listed as a follower, but don't think I got a link the last couple of times, so it was fun reading through them. I had received the first one. Judy has just signed in today.

  2. it's fun thinking back to the things you three said! The bilingual setup gives R & M an added dimension.
